Cancun is one of the most desirable destinations for anyone visiting Mexico. To many, it may seem like a luxurious and very expensive destination, but the reality is that there is something for everyone's tastes and budgets.
The first thing you need to know is that Cancun is a destination that is located in the state of Quintana Roo in Mexico. The city was founded in 1970 and since then has experienced growth, until becoming one of the most visited tourist destinations in Mexico along with Acapulco.
In the Riviera Maya, there is much to see and do. To make the trip worthwhile you have to move around a lot. Transportation will not be a problem, as you will be able to choose between public and private transportation, cabs and buses that will drop you off right where you need to go.
When you arrive at the airport in Cancun, you will find different transportation options to get to your hotel. The most expensive would be to take a cab. Depending on the time you arrive at the airport, you can consider the following options:
The bus takes you from the airport to the ADO terminal in Cancun (4USD), located in the center of the city, or to the one in Playa del Carmen. This service is available from 8 am to 12 pm.
The private transportation service is ideal if you are traveling as a group with family or friends. Most of these services charge for the transfer vehicle and not per person, which is a good option for Cancun airport transportation.
The most comfortable and practical way to tour the Riviera Maya is to rent a car in Cancun. One of the advantages is that you can rent a vehicle and return it at another point. Another advantage is that this area of the country has good and safe roads. If you go with several friends and share the cost of renting and fuel, this option is perfect.
Cancun is divided into several zones, but the most important are:
The beaches you should not miss are Playa Tortugas, Playa Delfines, Playa Ballenas, and Las Perlas. Besides relaxing at the beach, you can also enjoy shopping and nightlife in the tourist area. In Cancun town, don't miss its handicraft market. In the surroundings, you can taste local gastronomy at a fair price.
This paradise is located in front of Cancun. With one of the largest coral reefs in the world, you can't miss the opportunity to snorkel. Another remarkable sight of the island is its underwater art museum, Musa. For rest, relaxation, and margaritas, visit its beautiful coral beaches.
Playa del Carmen is very touristy but worth visiting. It has good beaches, rich gastronomy, and it is the ideal place for shopping. Only 45 minutes by ferry from here is the island of Cozumel with archeological zones, beautiful beaches, and natural parks.
A little farther from Cancun (about 130 kilometers) is this archaeological marvel. It is the only Mayan city on the shores of the Caribbean Sea, and I recommend it 100%. It is easy to reach this destination through a shuttle from Cancun airport to Tulum.
A little more than two hours by car from Cancun, you can find this archaeological jewel. To get there on your own, you can choose to rent a car or take a bus. You can also opt for an organized tour, which usually includes a guided tour and transportation.
Cenotes are flooded sinkholes. Some are open, semi-open, and the "youngest" are closed. Visiting a cenote is a unique experience, and there are many of them in both the state of Yucatan and Quintana Roo.
Although I did not get to visit this place, I do want to include it in the tips for traveling to Cancun because it has been recommended to me. Coba is another area of Mayan ruins and sites. It is not as well known as Chichen Itza, but they say it is as impressive as the wonder of the world.
If you like adventure and want to enjoy the natural and extreme, the eco-archaeological park Xcaret is the answer. The park includes a Mayan archaeological zone and guided visits to natural areas.
No matter what you decide, in Cancun, you will find different options to have a good trip. Now that you have an idea of everything you will find when visiting the Riviera Maya, you can prepare yourself for a pleasant and fun vacation. Enjoy its relaxing beaches or live the best experience in a cenote or water park. You decide how you will spend your trip!
