Why You Should Visit Amboseli National Park
August 12, 2019 | By: Taylor Randolph
Amboseli National Park is famous for being the best place in the world to get close to free-ranging elephants with incredible views over Mt. Kilimanjaro. The mountain is so stunningly high that if there are clouds in the sky, you won't even be able to see the summit. If you are looking to stay at Amboseli, there are both luxury and budget-friendly resort options. We found a lovely resort for just $500 for three days. Also, invest in a good tour guide. We were so impressed with how much knowledge our tour guide was able to share about the local flora and fauna. I can't imagine not having him on our trip. His insight really informed our trip and made us appreciate the natural beauty even more so. Stunning Mt. Kilimanjaro
Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest free-standing mountain in the world. The summit is at 16,100 feet (4,900 meters).
It is a stunning backdrop for taking pictures of the elephants.
Amboseli was home to Echo, perhaps the most researched elephant in the world, and the subject of many books and documentaries. She was followed for almost four decades by American conservationist, Dr. Cynthia Moss.
Amboseli National Park offers some of the best opportunities to see African wildlife because the vegetation is sparse due to the long, dry months.
The protected area is home to the African elephant, Cape buffalo, impala, lion, cheetah, spotted hyena, giraffe, zebra, hippopotamus, and blue wildebeest. A host of large and small birds occur too.
Best Time to Visit
The best time to visit Amboseli is from June to October and January to February. These are the dry months and animals will gather at predictable water sources.
In addition, views of Mt. Kilimanjaro are best from November to May, when the sky is clear of dust.
Due to the height of the mountain, if it is a cloudy day, then the top of the mountain will be covered by clouds.
The best opportunity to see Mt.Kilimanjaro is in the early morning.
The Maasai still live in the surrounding area of Amboseli National Park.
Many of the resorts in Amboseli will hire Maasai members to protect the village from pesky monkeys looking to steal food as well as more dangerous animals.
In the area, there will be plenty of opportunities to meet Maasai and visit a Maasai village.
It is considered respectful to not take pictures of the Maasai, so please follow their wishes.
