The Travelling Souk was set up in 2003 by Georgiana Grimston and Anna Craven. Inspired by a trip to the magical souks & markets of Marrakesh, Georgiana realised there was an opportunity to re-create them in the heart of British homes and raise money for charity. Each Travelling Souk event would become a unique private sale bringing together small businesses selling unique and exotic wares.
With her fashion background Georgiana quickly collected an extensive list of potential store holders to exhibit at each sale and soon an impressive schedule of private events were being run up and down the country with as many as 60 different stall holders at each venue. The Travelling Souk today still holds true to its original essence. Hostesses opening their homes to each event can nominate a personal charity and proceeds of the sales are donated at the end of the day. Since its inception The Travelling Souk has given over £260,000 to over 30 different charities.
By 2007 the Travelling Souk had over 500 unique niche suppliers. Keen to open up the market place to an even greater audience, the Travelling Souk launched an online market imporium www.thetravellingsouk.com. Under the careful guidance of Claire Simpson, this new online site has gone from strength to strength. Continuing with its charity ethos (every purchase includes a 2.6% donation to charity) shoppers can find some wonderful treasures from over 100 small businesses, and niche brands which won't be found anywhere else.
